Choose a skill small enough to practice
A useful teaching request can end with something you do yourself. Here we will practice a fictional club's naming rule for document labels. You can complete it on paper; no real files need to be opened or renamed.
The club uses YEAR-MONTH-DAY_topic_vNN. The month, day, and version each use two digits; the topic is a single lowercase word. For example, the first version of a garden note dated October 13, 2026 is 2026-10-13_garden_v01. This is an invented convention for the exercise, not a universal file-naming standard.
Supplying this rule gives the assistant context for the conversation; it does not permanently train the underlying model.

Help me practice this fictional document-label rule: YEAR-MONTH-DAY_topic_vNN. Use four digits for the year, two each for month and day, one lowercase topic word, and a two-digit version number. Teach one small step at a time. Begin with a short explanation and one worked example. Then give me a different practice question and wait for my answer without revealing it. Check my answer against the rule; point out any specific mismatch and let me try again. After two correct attempts, ask me to explain the rule in my own words. Use fictional dates and topics only. Do not ask me to change real files.
Keep the pace in your hands
Try answering before reading the next explanation. If the assistant gives away the answer, say: Give me a new practice item. Show only the question, then wait. If it uses jargon, say: Explain just that step with the garden example.
Google documents giving a model context and splitting complex instructions into smaller steps. This lesson applies those ideas to a practice conversation; it does not establish that an AI tutor improves learning or grades accurately.
Try a check that does not depend on the tutor
Without the chat, make a label for a second version of a poster note dated March 6, 2026. Stop here and write your attempt before reading the next paragraph.
Editorial answer key: 2026-03-06_poster_v02. Check the date order, 03 and 06, lowercase topic, underscores, and v02. This key was written for the exercise, not produced in a recorded model run. The model saying “correct” does not replace comparison with the rule.
Carry the pattern to another skill
Choose a short procedure you can verify in its original instructions. Supply the relevant non-sensitive excerpt, ask for one example and one practice turn, then try the task independently. For an actual workplace naming convention, use that workplace's instructions.
Keep the source beside the conversation. A chatbot may teach the wrong rule, miss an error, or move ahead before you are ready. Finish with one thing you can do yourself and one question that remains.
